Someone shows up at your house and knocks on the door. You open it, and they give you pizza and leave. You didn't order any pizza. Someone just came by and gave you pizza. Do you owe them anything? What if later they told you that you did. Should you pay them? should you throw the pizza up?
What if it's something bigger than pizza. Someone does something really really nice for you, or gets you some magnificent present without you even asking. Are you indebted to that person? Do you now owe that person? Should that person be able to control what you do with that thing they gave you? Should that person be able to punish you or reward you based on what you do with the thing they gave you? |
