Mom's birthday

Today June 30th 2007 is my mothers 75th birthday. The day was not as elaborate as I had hoped, but nice just the same. I grabbed my 2 oldest grandson's Treston and Bryce, and we picked up fried chicken and something to drink and whipped topping for the strawberry short cake she had planned. The kids were of course very bored. But they brightened up when the ground hog under the neighbors shed came out to eat. I may live in a city, but the local fauna doesn't care. We had fun reliving the opossum incident of 2 yrs ago. I gave my folks a peach tree about 12 years ago. It has reached it's peak of production. Meaning several bushels of ground fall. Now that year we had already picked 20 bushels off the tree with at least 10 bushels in the garbage. There was a storm due so we decided to pick the remaining peaches to keep them from being ruined by the storm. As we started to pick up the fallen ones my mother let out a loud scream. In the garbage can was a very large very drunk opossum. The fall peaches from the week had fermented. The opossum had climbed in the can and couldn't get out. He was so drunk I swear his eyes crossed. We dumped the can over and he just sat there. We tried to scare it out by hitting the bottom of the can. We dumped the can almost over and the opossum hung onto the rim. When we stood the can up, the critter hung on for a few seconds then let go and slowly slid to the bottom. Where it picked up a very ripe fermenting peach and started to eat. The storm was just a few minutes away so we all hustled to get the good peaches off the tree and get under cover of the deck. Just as the storm started to let loose, we tipped the can over again and dumped the drunken fool out along with the peaches. He was still eating!!! Then the storm went into over load. I think the hail got it's attention. It started to waddle across the lawn towards the alley and the trees. Now just picture, waddle waddle stumble 360 turn stager right waddle stagger left stagger left another 360 turn all the while slowly make way to the trees. We were laughing so hard I started crying and almost wet my pants. It's still raining and the hail is getting heavier by the minute. I took the little drunkard a full 5 minutes to make it 100 feet. This year there are no peaches because of the late freeze. But we had a very good laugh remembering. Happy Birthday Mom!!! LOVE YOU!!
