The band broke up in September of 2002, and soon after Miyavi released his first solo album Gagaku under the indie label PS Company. Miyavi's significant change in music and visual styles since leaving Dué le quartz caused many of his original audience to disperse, but attracted a new audience. Miyavi also starred as himself in the 2004 film Oresama and is regularly featured in various Japanese rock magazines such as Fools Mate, Arena 37c, and Shoxx magazine. In the past he has modeled in the Gothic & Lolita Bible and for various brands such as the clothing line Fotus. In 2004 Miyavi was scheduled to perform at various conventions in the United States, but was forced to cancel last minute due to staff issues. He was also scheduled for Megacon, but no replacement was provided. In 2004 the maxi-single Ashita, Genki ni Naare hit the number 1 spot on the Oricon indies chart.''Fool's Mate Sep 2004, Vol 9, pg 36 Majors and Pop/Acoustic Era Following his signing with Universal Records Japan in late 2004, he changed his name to "Myv", an apparent shortening of "Miyavi", although magazines and his website still refer to him as "Miyavi" presently. He released his first Majors single, Rock no Gyakushuu -Super Star no Jouken- in November 2004. He followed up this single with the release of his first Majors album, Miyavizm, in June 2005. Though Miyavizm holds the intense rock sound Miyavi was known for during his early career, after the album's release Miyavi began experimenting with different types of music. In late 2005 and for most of 2006, Miyavi adopted a softer and more romantic feel to his music as he began producing more of an acoustic/pop sound. This change was reflected in his second and third Majors albums, Myv Pops and Miyaviuta ~Dokusou~, released consecutively in August and September of 2006. He has said of Myv Pops, "It's like putting all the songs that I created, presenting my own attitude towards "popularity", into one album." work= Miyavi shortly followed up Myv Pops with the mostly acoustic album Miyaviuta ~Dokusou~, centered on the theme of love. Miyavi's focus on the Miyaviuta ~Dokusou~ album was to present himself as a performer. He says of this goal, "[...] for the album, [Miyaviuta ~Dokuso~] I wanted to fit in with the quality of the songs themselves and absorb myself into my performance, playing acoustic guitar alone." work= Miyavi showcased his new acoustic stylings for the first time in his "25 Shunen Kinen Koen Tokyo Geijutsu Gekijo 5 Days -Dokuso-" concert series held at Tokyo Geijutsu Gekijo in September 2006. The concerts, centered on his 25th birthday and spanning five days total, also featured a variety of background performers who accompanied Miyavi during his songs, among them tap dancers, percussionists, human beatboxers, taiko drummers, and painters. work= Commenting on the change in style from his earliers albums to his current albums, Miyavi has said, "Mostly I like low threshold music, which is popular, vulgar and foolish, and I like such lyrics too. But I also like more adult music too. As an artist, the worst thing for me is to be restrained and I don’t want to bind myself at all." work=JMusicAmerica.com Recent Events: US Debut, Neo Visualizm & Skin On February 8, 2007, Miyavi announced via his online diary that he would be performing live in Las Vegas. work=O-re-sa-na.com Due to short notice, only a number of fans were able to attend, but the event marked his musical debut in the United States. The mini-live took place at the Tabu Ultra Lounge in the MGM Grand on the night of February 17, 2007. work= SpyOnVeas.com On December 30, 2006 Miyavi put out a message that he would be joining a band. At the time, he did not disclose the people he would be working with, but it was rumored that he would be joining the project of Gackt (Malice Mizer), Sugizo (Luna Sea) and Yoshiki (X Japan). On May 25, 2007 at the J-rock Revolution concert organized by Yoshiki in Los Angeles, it was officially announced that Miyavi would indeed be a part of the "superband", named Skin Skin, so far consisting of Yoshiki, Gackt, Sugizo, Miyavi himself, and possibly Ju-Ken (Gackt's touring bassist) performed their debut live at the 2007 Anime Expo convention in Long Beach, California on June 29,2007. work= In May 2007, Miyavi announced his fourth major album--as well as his first remix album-- to be released in July. The album, titled ''7 Samurai Sessions -We're Kavki Boiz-'', will feature re-arrangements of his past songs and will feature a variety of instruments such as a turntable, various drums and tap dancing. work= The limited edition of the album will include a DVD with bonus studio recording footage. work= Miyavi's 7th major single (and 14th overall), a double A-side entitled Sakihokoru Hana no you ni -Neo Visualizm- / Kabuki Danshi, was released on June 20, 2007, and debuted at #4 on the Oricon Charts. work= Miyavi's next tour, entitled "The Beginning of Neo Visualizm Tour", is scheduled to start on July 16th. So far, the tour is planned for twenty venues in Japan and a stop in Korea, and will last about six weeks, with its final show on September 2nd at Shinkiba Studio Coast. The tour will also feature the creative accompaniment team of performers (known as the "Kavki Boiz") seen with Miyavi during his "25 Shunen Kinen Koen Tokyo Geijutsu Gekijo 5 Days -Dokuso-" concerts. work=O-re-sa-ma.com On September 3, a new single was announced, entitled "Subarashikikana, Kono Sekai - What A Wonderful World". Although he is no longer part of the group, he says he still loves all members of the band in their own special ways. He composes his own music and originally wanted to be a conductor. He reads all his fanmail and even occasionally responds to lucky fans. Gackt says that he became psychic after a near-death experience during his childhood. He also says he used to be possessed by spirits. Gackt's parents were very strict and only allowed him to watch educational TV programs and listen to Classical music. Early life Gackt has never released his real name or birth date. Since his Malice Mizer era, Gackt claims to be a vampire born on July 4, 1540. Media speculation is that he was actually born on July 4, 1973. Further investigation has led researchers to believe that his real name is Satoru Okabe, but none of this is known for certain. Gackt was born in Okinawa, Japan and was raised by strict parents. At the age of seven, Gackt nearly drowned in the sea of Okinawa. According to his autobiography (Jihaku), after being saved, he developed paranormal abilities, seeing things and people that others could not. As a result, he was committed to isolation in a mental hospital. In the same autobiography, Gackt claims he does not want to have children so that he won't pass these problematic abilities to them. Gackt is and has always been extremely competitive and has even stated, "It's not that I want to win, it's just that I don't want to lose." His parents, both musicians, began his formal lessons in classical piano when he was three, even though it was physically impossible for him to play. After many years of having no real interest in these lessons, his competitive nature made him want to master the piano after one day seeing a friend play better than him. His musical preference later shifted to brass instruments though, after seeing his father play the trumpet. When Gackt turned seventeen, his taste in music changed from classical to rock. As a result of this, he began learning to play instruments that deviated from the classical standards of music, eventually focusing on contemporary rock. Gackt started as a drummer for both a Japanese recording studio and an unknown band. Later on he formed the band, Cains:feel. Solo career After leaving Malice Mizer, Gackt began a solo career with a band he created called "GacktJOB,"" which consisted of several members including You (violin/rhythm guitar), Yukihiro "Chachamaru" Fujimura (lead guitar/effects), Masa (rhythm guitar), Ren (bass), Toshi (drums), Yosh (choreographer/dancer), and Igao (keyboards). GacktJOB later added Ryuichi Ryu Nishida on drums, and Ju-ken on bass. Gackt's live shows often included homoerotic play (fan service) with some of these members. His solo career has been a great success as he continues to maintain a level of popularity far greater than he achieved with Malice Mizer. His fans (whom he calls "Dears") are from many different countries around the world. In addition to music, Gackt has been involved as an actor in various TV commercials (usually playing himself), and in the Japanese drama Hero's Hero. He also co-wrote and co-starred in the hit vampire movie Moon Child with HYDE, vocalist of L'Arc-en-Ciel, with whom he is rumored to have had a romantic relationship; Gackt and Hyde are still close friends and deny such statements. Gackt is also officially an author, having written, Moonchild: Requiem, and several as-yet unpublished short stories. In 2003 he published his autobiography entitled Jihaku, in which he displayed his deep thoughts and described events which had a profound impact on his life. Gackt worked as a runway model for his favorite designer, Yoshiyuki Konishi; designed his own stage-wear and clothing line; and opened his own private, members-only restaurant and bar, Tamaly Bar, complete with his own personal and family recipies. Gackt was also involved in the PlayStation 2 game 'Bujingai', for which he performed some of the voices as well as doing motion capture for the game's protagonist. He has also appeared in Japanese commercials for the hit game 'Metal Gear Solid 2', and his name appeared on a dog tag in the game. Other voice-over work of Gackt's includes the character 'Seiji' from the anime New Fist of the North Star (Shin Hokuto no Ken). He also performed the ending theme Tsuki no Uta for the anime Texhnolyze. Gackt is usually cited as being the model for the 'Final Fantasy VIII' lead Squall Leonhart's character design (although the game's character designer has claimed the actual inspiration for Squall was the American actor River Phoenix). However, a character with his likeness will not appear in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Instead he will be recorded doing motion work and digitally inserted into the game, so he will be performing in live action. In early 2005 he was asked to write and perform the theme songs for the Gundam movie 'Zeta Gundam: A New Translation', a movie eagerly anticipated the anime-community. The songs were 'Metamorphoze' and a rearrangement of a previously released song, Kimi ga Matteiru kara. Gackt's single, "Redemption" is the theme for Dirge of Cerberus, and was relased along side the game. For Caparison Guitars, he has designed two guitars, named "Marcury" and "Venus". Since January 7, 2007, Gackt has been playing the warlord Uesugi Kenshin in the NHK drama Fūrinkazan. Gackt's most recent solo release is the single "Returner ~Yami no Shuen~", released on June 20, 2007, which is the first in the artist's career (both solo and in a band) to reach the number one spot on the Japanese Oricon charts.Gackt will be providing the voice for Malthazar in the Japanese release of the film Arthur and the Minimoys, set for September 2007. In October of 2007 Gackt released all 201 of his songs on iTunes for purchase. Full length albums are also available for purchasing. On May 25, 2007, the formation of the super group Skin was announced, which besides Gackt consists of fellow pop/rock artist Miyavi, former Luna Sea guitarist Sugizo, and X Japan co-founder Yoshiki. The group gave its debut performance at the Anime Expo convention in Long Beach, California on June 29, 2007 and plans to release an album. Gackt Job is Gackt's live support band. Its current lineup is as follows: * Yukihiro "Chachamaru" Fujimura – backing vocals, lead guitar * You – violin, guitar * Ju-Ken – bass * Jun-ji – drums * Igao – keyboards
